💚Pressure Sore/Bed Sore: Things to Watch Out for When Caring for Bedridden Patients
Caring for the elderly with pressure sores requires wound assessment and treatment by surgeons and specialists.
😀This is the most common and dangerous complication. It occurs when the patient lies in the same position for extended periods of time, causing compression of the skin and tissue around bony prominences. This can lead to insufficient blood supply, resulting in ischemia and death.
✅The best prevention method is:
Turn the patient every two hours. Regularly check the skin around bony prominences, such as the coccyx, heels, elbows, and behind the ears.
Use an air mattress or mattress to distribute pressure.
Use a pillow or cloth under the calves to elevate the heels off the bed surface.
✅Equipment to Prepare:
• At least 2-3 pillows or a wedge pillow for support.
Steps for Turning Sideways (e.g., Turning to the Right Side):
👉Step 1: Prepare and Inform the Patient

Inform the patient that you are about to turn. Adjust the bed to waist level and lower the bed rails. Prepare a pillow for support.
👉Step 2: Position the patient before turning (move the patient to the opposite side).

Gently move the patient to the edge of the bed opposite the side to be turned to, allowing room for turning.
👉Step 3: Prepare the patient’s arms and legs.

Place the arm to be pressed straight or across the chest. Place the upper arm across the body, and bend the upper knee upwards, or cross the upper leg over the lower leg.
👉Step 4: Turn the patient.

Place one hand on the patient’s shoulder and the other on the hip. Gently pull the patient toward you, moving the body together.
👉Step 5: Position and support with pillows.
After turning, place a pillow under the patient’s back for support. Place a pillow between the knees and ankles, and position the arms comfortably.
👉Step 6: Check for comfort and safety. Check clothing and bedsheets for tightness and tightness. Check for redness on the skin. Raise the bed rails for safety.
